Synastry is the astrological technique of comparing two birth charts to understand the dynamics between two people. It reveals the magnetic attractions, natural tensions, communication patterns, and long-term compatibility that exist between partners — going far deeper than simple sun sign matching.
How Synastry Works
In synastry, each person's planets are placed around the other person's chart. The astrologer then examines which of your planets interact with your partner's planets and houses. These interactions — called aspects — reveal the nature of your connection.
A conjunction (0 degrees) means two planets merge energy. An opposition (180 degrees) creates magnetic attraction with tension. A trine (120 degrees) flows effortlessly. A square (90 degrees) creates friction that demands growth. Each aspect tells a specific story about how you and your partner interact.
The Most Important Synastry Aspects
Sun-Moon contacts — The most significant indicator of emotional compatibility. When one person's Sun conjuncts the other's Moon, there is a natural sense of belonging. The Sun person feels understood; the Moon person feels safe. This aspect appears in many lasting relationships.
Venus-Mars contacts — The chemistry indicators. Venus-Mars conjunctions or oppositions create intense physical and romantic attraction. Venus represents what you love; Mars represents how you pursue it. When these planets interact between charts, the spark is undeniable.
Moon-Moon aspects — Emotional wavelength compatibility. Harmonious Moon aspects (conjunction, trine, sextile) mean you process emotions in compatible ways. Challenging Moon aspects (square, opposition) mean your emotional needs frequently clash.
Mercury-Mercury aspects — Communication compatibility. Harmonious Mercury contacts mean you think similarly and conversation flows naturally. Challenging aspects suggest misunderstandings and different communication styles that require patience.
Challenging Synastry Aspects
Not all difficult aspects are dealbreakers. In fact, some tension is necessary for attraction and growth:
Saturn contacts — Saturn in synastry brings commitment, structure, and sometimes restriction. Saturn conjunct someone's Venus can indicate a serious, lasting bond — but also one where the Saturn person may feel overly critical of the Venus person's values or appearance. Saturn aspects test relationships but also stabilize them.
Pluto contacts — Pluto creates intensity and transformation. Pluto conjunct someone's Moon is one of the most powerful synastry aspects — it creates a bond that feels fated, obsessive, and deeply transformative. These relationships change both people fundamentally.
Mars-Mars squares — These create conflict and competition. Both people want to lead, and neither backs down easily. In healthy relationships, this becomes passionate energy. In unhealthy ones, it becomes constant fighting.
House Overlays — Where Your Partner's Planets Fall
Beyond aspects, synastry examines which houses your partner's planets activate in your chart:
Their planets in your 1st house — They have a strong impact on your identity and self-image. You feel seen by them.
Their planets in your 4th house — They feel like home. This overlay creates a sense of emotional safety and domestic compatibility.
Their planets in your 5th house — Romance, fun, and creative energy. This is the classic "falling in love" overlay. Relationships with strong 5th house connections feel playful and exciting.
Their planets in your 7th house — The partnership house. Their planets here suggest they are a natural fit for committed partnership with you. This overlay appears frequently in marriages.
Their planets in your 8th house — Intensity, intimacy, and transformation. 8th house overlays create deep, sometimes obsessive bonds. The relationship transforms both people but can also feel consuming.
Their planets in your 10th house — They impact your career and public image. Power couple energy — you help each other succeed professionally.
The Vertex and Fated Connections
The Vertex is a calculated point in the chart that astrologers associate with fated encounters. When someone's planet conjuncts your Vertex, the meeting often feels destined — as though you were meant to cross paths. Vertex contacts do not guarantee permanence, but they indicate the relationship serves a karmic or evolutionary purpose.
Beyond Synastry — Composite Charts
While synastry compares two separate charts, a composite chart merges them into one. The composite chart represents the relationship itself as a third entity. Synastry shows how YOU relate to THEM and how THEY relate to YOU. The composite chart shows what the RELATIONSHIP is — its personality, strengths, and purpose.
What Synastry Cannot Tell You
Synastry reveals potential, not certainty. A chart with perfect aspects can still result in a failed relationship if the people involved lack emotional maturity, communication skills, or willingness to grow. Conversely, challenging synastry can produce an incredible relationship when both partners are committed to working through their differences.
The chart shows the raw material. What you build with it is always your choice.
