Your birth chart, also known as a natal chart, is a cosmic snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born. Think of it as your personal cosmic blueprint — a map of where every planet, the sun, and the moon were positioned relative to Earth when you took your first breath.
What Is a Birth Chart?
A birth chart is divided into 12 sections called houses, each representing a different area of your life. The planets occupy these houses and the zodiac signs they were in at your birth influence how those planetary energies manifest in your personality and life experiences.
To generate your birth chart, you need three pieces of information: your date of birth, exact time of birth, and place of birth. The more precise your birth time, the more accurate your chart will be — especially for your rising sign, which changes every two hours.
The Big Three: Sun, Moon, and Rising
The three most important placements in your birth chart are often called "The Big Three":
Your Sun Sign represents your core identity, ego, and the essence of who you are. It's the sign most people know because it's based on your birthday. Your sun sign reveals your fundamental character traits, life purpose, and the qualities you're developing throughout your lifetime.
Your Moon Sign reveals your emotional inner world, instincts, and subconscious patterns. While your sun sign is who you are to the world, your moon sign is who you are when no one is watching. It governs your emotional responses, comfort needs, and deepest feelings.
Your Rising Sign (or Ascendant) is the zodiac sign that was on the eastern horizon at your exact moment of birth. It represents your outward personality, first impressions, and physical appearance. Your rising sign is the mask you wear in public and how others initially perceive you.

Reading Planetary Aspects
Aspects are the geometric angles formed between planets in your chart. The major aspects include conjunctions (0°), sextiles (60°), squares (90°), trines (120°), and oppositions (180°). Trines and sextiles are generally harmonious, while squares and oppositions create tension that drives growth.
